A year in Sri Lanka brings results

Over the past year, coaches from Tottenham Hotspur Foundation and FC Basel 1893 have worked with the SCORT Foundation to educate 30 young men and women from Sri Lanka to be children’s football coaches.

Over the past year, coaches from Tottenham Hotspur Foundation and FC Basel 1893 have worked with the SCORT Foundation to educate 30 young men and women from Sri Lanka to be children’s football coaches.

Four visits have been made to the town of Mannar to carry out four modules of the project, aimed at teaching participants how to organise adequate youth coaching sessions.

Two participants, Jacob and Anastin, were already engaged in the field of sports as physical education teachers and youth coaches when they heard of the project. Both were eager to learn from international and experienced coaches on how to coach children in a more professional way. Anastin said, “I would like to continue coaching football teams in a professional context and hope one day two or more of my players will play in the Sri Lankan national team.”

Joe Lyons, Operations Manager at Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, is happy with the progress the project participants made during the year and said, “I’ve noticed that the confidence and self-esteem increase a lot since last May when the project started. Coming back a year after the first trip, it is clear that the work in Mannar has a wider context than just coaching skills. These modules have only been the tip of the iceberg of what can be achieved in the region”.

The Foundation will continue to work abroad to offer best practice skills to ensure high coaching standards provided for young people throughout the world.
