'A nice first game for me' - Jan on Bees run-out

Jan Vertonghen was delighted to get back into action in Wednesday’s training ground friendly against Brentford.
The Belgian international defender completed his first 45 minutes since the summer break as we saw off the Championship side 2-1 in a behind-closed-doors contest at Hotspur Way, partnering Federico Fazio at centre-back during the second period.
Having returned to training at the beginning of last week, the 28-year-old said it’s been a strenuous few days out on the pitches but reinforced how important it is for the players to carry over their hard work in training into game situations in order to fully prepare themselves for the start of the new campaign.
“It was a good match against a strong Brentford team and for me it was a nice first game to play,” said Jan.
“We had more of the possession and it was a good opponent for us to play at this stage.
“We know that fitness is very important and we’re training very hard, but we try to put the same effort in during the games as well.
“We’ve also got a bunch of new lads and some younger guys who are doing fantastically well and these games are a great chance for them to show what their qualities are and for us to learn new things as well.”
