'A great European night' - Andre

Andre Villas-Boas congratulated the team on another glory, glory night in Europe after beating Inter Milan 3-0 at the Lane - but warned our Europa League, Round of 16 tie was far from over.

Goals from Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen secured a convincing 3-0 win in the first leg and it would have been more but for some heroics from visiting goalkeeper Samir Handanovic. Gareth also struck the post in the second half.

Inter didn’t trouble us too much - 57 per cent possession and 17-7 shots in our favour tells that story - but they did create a golden opportunity in each half as Ricardo Alvarez fired wide and then Brad Friedel made a point-blank save from Rodrigo Palacio.

However, it was our night as we built a commanding lead to take to the San Siro for the second leg next Thursday, March 14.

“It was a great European night and a great win for the lads,” said Andre.

“After we beat Lyon there was a buzz in the dressing room to play an opponent of this dimension and we managed to have a great performance.

“The players pressed hard and caused Inter lots of problems. We had some good chances and could have made it 2-0 even earlier.

“We played some excellent attacking football and tried to limit their chances.

“The tie hasn’t finished yet. We still have to go there, a difficult stadium with all their experience and everything can still change. It’s a difficult place to go so we have to make sure we are competent and book our place in the last eight.”
