50 years since Pat's international bow

Tue 15 April 2014, 10:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Today marks the 50th anniversary of Pat Jennings’ full Northern Ireland international debut.

Legendary goalkeeper Pat, who joined us from Watford in June, 1964, went on to play 590 games for Spurs and win 119 senior caps for his country.

His Irish debut came against Wales at the Vetch Field where he helped his side win 3-2.  Fellow Spurs team mates Cliff Jones and Mike England were in the Welsh side.

“It’s incredible to think that it was 50 years ago,” says Pat.  “I still remember it well - plus the fact that George Best also made his debut in that same game.  I enjoy continually reminding Cliffy of that outcome!”

Northern Ireland won the Home International clash thanks to goals from Martin Harvey, Samuel Wilson and James McLaughlin with Ron Davies and Brian Godfrey on target for Wales.
