'We wanted third'

Lamela, Eriksen, Lloris and Walker-Peters on thrilling finale

Mon 14 May 2018, 12:20|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino described it as 'showing our character one more time' and the players were certainly not going to let go of third place lightly as we came from 3-1 down to beat Leicester City 5-4 in the season's finale at Wembley.

Having trailed early and levelled through Harry Kane, we found ourselves two goals adrift two minutes into the second half.

The attitude of the players from that point was best summed up by Christian Eriksen. "We didn't want to lie down."

Erik Lamela took the game by the scruff of the neck and completely turned it around in 11 minutes, scoring twice and forcing an own goal - with two assists from Kyle Walker-Peters - to take us into a 4-3 lead.

Of course, that wasn't all as Jamie Vardy blasted home his second of the game to level at 4-4 on 73 minutes.

Then the fitting finale as Harry curled home a beauty for his 30th Premier League goal and 41st of the season to clinch the 5-4 win and third place from Liverpool.

Here's what Christian, Hugo Lloris, Erik and Kyle had to say as they thanked the fans on the lap of appreciation around Wembley...

Overall thoughts...

"We showed that we wanted to finish third. We didn't want to lie down in the last game with all our supporters in here. It wasn't ideal to go 1-0 down after three minutes but we picked it up in the second half, turned it around and thankfully secured third place. It was a good way to finish, a very exciting game for everyone. Perhaps for us, a little too exciting! Anyway, third looks much better than fourth and we all go away with a win."

Overall thoughts...

"What a game! Listen, the most important thing is that we kept third place at that was the target before the game. Obviously it was an open game and we found the energy to come back a lot of times in the game, so congratulations to the players and the team. We got the three points and it was a spectacular performance, I’m sure the fans enjoyed it. We can enjoy third place and we’re all looking forward to next season."

On finding out his second goal was awarded as an own goal, therefore robbing him of a hat-trick...

"You know what? I don't really care about that. I care only about the team. We won and that's the most important thing. It's very good that we've finished third. To play at Wembley all season and finish third is a real achievement."

On getting the call to start...

"My initial reaction was being a little nervous but I just thought back to the first game of the season (when he started at Newcastle) and the cup games I’ve played in and trying to use those experiences to help me."

On his performance - and two assists...

"I’m glad I could help the team win the game. The tempo is so much different in the Premier League. I tried to pace myself and once I started to get into it I tried to get myself forward a lot more. In the second half when it was really open I got forward more and more and managed to assist Coco twice. It was a crazy game!"
