Mauricio's latest on Toby's fitness

Fri 19 January 2018, 15:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino reports that Toby Alderweireld could begin his integration with the first team squad on Saturday.

The central defender has been out of action since damaging his hamstring in our UEFA Champions League win against Real Madrid at Wembley back in November.

Speaking in his pre-Southampton press conference, Mauricio was asked if Toby’s integration was going to start next week.

“Maybe tomorrow, if all is good,” responded Mauricio. “Today he has the last scan and if all goes well, that’s the plan, to do the warm-up with the team, the first exercises and then integrate gradually with the group.

“We’ll see next week step by step if he can improve his fitness to be available as soon as possible.”

Asked if that could mean a return to action in our FA Cup fourth round tie at Newport County on Saturday week (27 January), Mauricio added: “Maybe, we’ll have all (of next) week to train and we’ll see if he can arrive in condition to play. We’ll assess him day by day next week.”
