'This team is right up there' - Tom
03 June 2016|Tottenham Hotspur
Tom Carroll reckons our current squad is as progressive as any he’s seen during his time at White Hart Lane.
The home-grown midfielder, who joined our Academy set-up at the age of eight and has risen through the ranks to establish himself at senior level, saw four of his playing colleagues named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year following a 2015-16 campaign that yielded some truly memorable moments.
Harry Kane , Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose were all recognised in the end-of-season reckoning while countless other players received praise for their endeavours under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino as we eventually finished third in the domestic standings.
Indeed, the recently-ended campaign was widely regarded as one of our best of the modern era thanks to the performances of the players and 24-year-old Tom, who racked up 30 appearances in all competitions, is hard-pushed to disagree.
“I think where we are just shows how far we as a team and a club have come over the time I’ve been here,” said the Watford-born grafter, who bagged his first three senior goals for us in December and January.
“When people talk about the good Spurs teams of the last 10 years or so, this one has got to be up there as well as the side that last played in the Champions League.
“It was a season of ups and downs but we all made progress.”
On his own endeavours during the campaign, which saw him hit the target against Monaco, Norwich (pictured above) and Colchester and earn his first Premier League start for us against Newcastle just before the festive period, Tom added: “Having been at the club since the age of eight, getting my first goals in the Europa League and then the Premier League were big moments and they were really nice times for me and my family.
“It was nice to chip in with a few goals – it’s the best feeling when you hit the back of the net and hopefully I can achieve that a bit more. Obviously I had quite a good spell around the New Year where I got quite a lot of games in which was great, but in general the whole team did well and hopefully there will be more good work to come.”
