Terborg campaign ends in defeat

Our Academy side rounded off their Terborg Tournament campaign in the Netherlands with a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday lunchtime (May 22).
As the only two English sides in the competition, we met our London rivals in the fifth and sixth place play-off but it was the Blues who emerged victorious after scoring twice in the first period.
It could have been a different story had we converted our chances, however.
Jack Roles forced a good save from the Chelsea goalkeeper with a central free-kick but a handball decision against Charlie Owens allowed our opponents to forge ahead from the penalty spot after 11 minutes.
Christian Maghoma and Kazaiah Sterling went close as the first of two 25-minute halves progressed while Joe Pritchard fired over the bar from five yards out.
A Chelsea free-kick hit the top of Brandon Austin’s crossbar at the other end but two minutes before the break it was 2-0 as we lost possession cheaply in our own half and allowed the Blues to score.
Pritchard hit the post after the interval while Keanan Bennetts, on as a substitute for Sterling, had a pair of efforts well saved, but ultimately we were unable to find a route back into the game and our Academy season ended in disappointing fashion.
“At 2-0 it proved hard to get back into the game,” reflected John McDermott, our Head of Player Development. “I thought it was fairly even in the first half, they got a penalty but then after the second goal it was difficult.
“The chances were probably fairly even in the game but they took theirs and we didn’t.”
Reflecting on the competition overall, John added: “It’s been a very good experience for the boys over the last few days at a very tough tournament and I’m pleased that Christian Maghoma has continued his good form from the NextGen Series in Amsterdam last week. Similarly, Aramide Oteh has hopefully given himself something to build on when we come back in July by having a good end to the season.”
