Stalemate in Terborg opener
20 May 2016|Tottenham Hotspur
Our Academy battled out a goalless draw with Nacional de Colombia in their first game at the Terborg Tournament in the Netherlands this evening (Friday, May 20).
Kicking-off our group stage campaign against the South American side, we encountered a tough test and goalkeeper Tom McDermott made an important save in the first period from a wide angled shot.
With the match being played over two 25-minute halves, we grew into the contest after the restart and Joe Pritchard, Samuel Shashoua, Joe Muscatt and Aramide Oteh all went close to making the breakthrough.
Unfortunately, though, we weren’t quite able to kill off a stubborn opposing side, as underlined by Head of Player Development John McDermott.
“It was a really tough game,” he reflected. “The opponents were very physical, they played a shape and a style that would be very unorthodox in England and I thought we adapted to it really well.
“It’s 25 minutes each way in these games so it’s really quick-fire stuff, very intense. We had chances but didn’t quite have enough zip and power in our finishes. We created some good opportunities, though, and it was a satisfying day’s work at what is a really top tournament.”
Next up in the group stage is Feyenoord in one of two games tomorrow (Saturday, May 21). Kick-off is at 12noon local time before we face Atletico Mineiro later in the day at 5pm local time.
Spurs (v Nacional de Colombia): McDermott, Tanganga (Duncan 37), Bennetts, Marsh (Goddard 40), Walkes, Mukena, Tracey (Muscatt 43), Stylianides, Sterling (Oteh 37), J Pritchard (Roles 45), Shashoua.
