Mauricio's trust made life easy for me - Dele

26 May 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Dele Alli believes Mauricio Pochettino was instrumental to his success in his first year in the top flight.

The former MK Dons starlet burst onto the Premier League scene with us in 2015-16, reaching doubles figures in front of goal - notably scoring Match of the Day’s Goal of the Season at Crystal Palace in January - and starting 28 times, adding five more appearances from the bench.

He also got his first taste of European football, appearing in nine of our 10 Europa League games, and played his way into the senior England national team reckoning.

It all ended with Dele being named PFA Young Player of the Year and earning a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year along with club team-mates Harry Kane, Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose.

A fantastic, humble character around the Training Centre, the 20-year-old admitted the amount of game time afforded to him as a result of his good form probably exceeded his expectations, although he was keen to highlight the role Mauricio played in his on-pitch progress when looking back on the recently-concluded campaign.

“It’s been really good for me and obviously I’ve been able to learn a lot - it would be hard not to learn a lot when you’re playing with this group of players and the manager we’ve got here,” said the midfielder.

“I knew how good the team was when I signed here, that was probably why I didn’t expect to play as much as I have and I knew I was going to have to fight for my place.

“Thankfully when I got the opportunity I took it and I have to thank the manager a lot for what’s happened to me so far, how he’s helped me and put a lot of trust in me. It all made it easy for me to go out there and play my football.

“It was an enjoyable experience playing here at Tottenham over the last season and hopefully there will be many more good times to come.”
