Lamela backs lads to shine on European stage

Erik Lamela reckons our players are well equipped for an assault on Euro 2016 – and next season’s Champions League.
The Argentina international showed his true mettle in a Spurs shirt in 2015-16 as we broke all kinds of club records and produced some memorable performances on the way to an eventual third place league finish and qualification for Europe’s premier club competition.
With the football world now very much in tournament mode, Erik is gearing up for Argentina’s first match at the Copa America against Chile in the early hours of Tuesday morning, while 11 of his Spurs colleagues are bound for Euro 2016 in France.
Looking ahead, Erik has backed his team-mates to replicate last season’s domestic exploits on the European stage, both for club and country.
“Everyone can do well in the Euros this summer,” he said. “There are some players who are French, some who are Belgian, some English and others too with Austria and Wales so I hope everyone can do well. It will be interesting to see how they play.
“For us at Spurs, it will be nice to be in the Champions League next season as well. Obviously we didn’t play in it the last couple of years that I’ve been here but it will be great for this team to be in the Champions League, for sure.
“I think we can perform well in Europe – we have the right team to compete. We hope that those who play for their national teams come back strong, play well in pre-season and play well from the beginning of our season.”
