'It feels good when you don't concede' - Kevin

01 June 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Kevin Wimmer has highlighted how much he values clean sheets by likening them to scoring goals at the other end.

The Austrian international centre-back made 21 appearances in his debut season at White Hart Lane and enjoyed a run of games in the Premier League between January and early April when Jan Vertonghen was injured.

We didn’t concede in four of the nine domestic matches he started for us, contributing to an overall joint-best defensive record in the top flight.

Of course, the highly-effective centre-half partnership between Jan and his fellow Belgian international Toby Alderweireld also played a part, but Kevin said that, no matter who was on duty on the field, the aim was always to maintain a blank slate.

“Of course, it’s always a good feeling, especially for a defender, when you don’t concede goals,” said the 23-year-old.

“For me, it was a very good time when I had that run of games during the season. I played a lot of matches in a row and, of course, I always tried to do my best for the team and concede as few goals as possible.

“As a centre-back, maybe keeping a clean sheet can feel better than scoring a goal – sometimes as a defender you are happier if you don’t concede.”

As well as letting in the joint-fewest league goals, the recently-ended season also saw us incur our fewest-ever defeats in a top flight campaign – our total of six losses bettering the seven defeats we suffered in the Double-winning season of 1960-61.

Understandably pleased with that statistic, Kevin insisted that the entire team played a role in our defensive endeavours in 2015-16 and not just the back four.

“You always talk about the defenders when it comes to not conceding goals but I think the whole team defended very well in general and it was a performance we can all be proud of,” he added.

“We had a lot of games, in most of them we didn’t concede a lot of chances and most of the time we either kept a clean sheet or conceded only one goal. In the main I think we did very well over the course of the season.”
