Internationals - quintet on duty in England victory

02 June 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

There was once again a sizeable Spurs contingent in the England line-up as the Three Lions beat Portugal 1-0 in their final pre-Euro 2016 friendly at Wembley on Thursday night (June 2).

For the second time in three matches leading up to the tournament, all five of our lads in the squad started the game - Kyle Walker and Danny Rose on duty in the full-back positions, Eric Dier and Dele Alli occupying midfield roles and Harry Kane playing as part of a front two - matching a club record.

Harry was the player fouled as Portugal’s Bruno Alves was shown a straight red card in the first period while Kyle caught the eye with a number of clever interceptions and bursts down the right side.

Indeed, the full-back had England’s best opportunity of the first period when the ball broke to him 25 yards from goal and he unleashed a strike that whistled inches past the post.

That would have no doubt contributed to the 26-year-old eventually being named England’s Man of the Match.

Despite playing against 10 men for a large chunk of the game, it wasn’t until the 86th minute when the Three Lions finally snatched the lead through Chris Smalling’s header.

Harry was off the pitch by that stage, replaced by Daniel Sturridge on 77 minutes, while Dele (pictured above) was withdrawn in the final minute of normal time. Kyle, Danny and Eric saw out the full match.

England kick-off their Euro 2016 Group B campaign against Russia on Saturday, June 11.
