Internationals - England action

27 May 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Eric Dier was the only player of our five on duty to face Australia as England won Friday night's friendly 2-1 at Sunderland's Stadium of Light.

Now a holding midfielder, versatile Eric stepped back into a central defensive role to earn his sixth cap as a 73rd-minute substitute for Chris Smalling.

However, it didn't exactly go to plan - Eric diverted a header past his own goalkeeper Fraser Forster just two minutes later as he dived in low to try and clear a dipping cross from the right touchline.

England held on for a second 2-1 win in a week thanks to goals from debutant Marcus Rashford in the third minute and Wayne Rooney early in the second half.

Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker remained on the bench. All five of our players completed the 90 minutes in Sunday's friendly win against Turkey, where Harry was on target.

Tuesday is the next day of note in the England calendar as Roy Hodgson trims his squad from 26 to a final 23 for the European Championships.

England then take on Portugal at Wembley on Thursday before jetting off to France and their first Euro 2016 against Russia in Marseille on June 11.
