Hugo speaks from the heart

26 April 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Hugo Lloris spoke with typical honesty, emotion and no little pride after Monday night's 1-1 draw against West Brom.

Stepping out of a despondent changing room, the skipper gave us an insight his team-mates' collective state of mind on what was a rare disappointment in a memorable 2015-16 campaign, as the result leaves us seven points adrift of leaders Leicester City with three matches remaining.

It's been a long time since the players have felt like this...
"There are no words to describe the feeling. It’s strange because we had a very good first half, high intensity, we took some risks but we created a lot of chances and were unlucky because we hit the post and the crossbar. In the second half, things turned a bit. We should have done a bit more in terms of aggression in front of goal, but listen, we are men and we need to finish as strong as possible."

Mauricio commented on how well we started the game, perhaps another goal and we might have gone on to win...
Hugo: "In football and especially in the Premier League, one goal is never enough, even two goals aren’t enough because the way teams play with such intensity, they don’t need too many chances to score. A team like West Brom always believe until the end and that’s what happened. As I said, it’s difficult to describe our feelings at the moment. We need to recover and at the same time, if you look at the season, we’ve never been in first place, we’ve just been running after Leicester. We need to finish second now."

We'd won 10 of 13 coming into this, it's been a brilliant run and we can't lose sight of that...
Hugo: "We’re having a great season and that’s why we need to carry on and finish as strong as possible in the last three games. Of course there is a lot of disappointment because in the last two, three months we started to believe, the fans started to believe as well. I don’t take it like we failed because of the way we play and we were five points, eight points, sometimes 10 points behind, it’s difficult to manage that.

"Now it’s a question of pride and to finish strong. The next game is a big game at Chelsea and we need to enjoy it. We need to show we are strong and we need to finish the job. We are still a young squad and there is a lot of positives this season. There is no reason why we can’t have a bright future, we just need to have the same mentality, and football is football."

Everyone was so down at the final whistle but a few moments later, the fans were giving how all a chorus of 'we love you Tottenham...' How much did that mean to the players?
Hugo: "Inside the changing room we have a lot of respect for our fans. They are brilliant. They are doing great for us. They always back us and they will do it until the end because they love Tottenham. From the beginning of the season the players have showed a lot of respect for the jersey and even today, we tried our best, but a lot of things went against us. We just carry on and keep our heads high, because we’re doing great."
