'Everyone deserves a good end to the season' - Jan
06 May 2016|Tottenham Hotspur
“We want that second spot and we’re going to do everything to make that happen.”
That’s the concise yet determined message from Jan Vertonghen as we gear up for Sunday’s final home game of the season against Southampton.
The 29-year-old, one half of our Belgian centre-half double-act along with Toby Alderweireld, was as disappointed as anyone to see our title hopes slip away at Chelsea last Monday night.
But with the prospect of cementing runners-up spot and finishing above the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United still on the cards, Jan says there will be no let-up from the players this weekend against a Saints side chasing Europa League qualification.
“Both teams have lots to play for,” said the popular defender. “I think some people believe our season is over because we didn’t win the league but we want to finish second and we’re going to do everything to do that so we want to win this game.
“Everyone deserves it – the supporters, the technical staff, the medical team and us as players. We’ve worked so hard to make beautiful things happen and I think we have done that. We’ve got everyone behind us, it’s a great atmosphere at the club and we’ve got to try to show that on Sunday.
“Obviously Southampton are still playing for a spot in Europe so I think it will be a very good match with two teams who play nice, attacking football. It’s going to be a very intense game but it’s our last home match of the season so we want to do well for the supporters. We want to thank them and they want to make a nice occasion of it so I think it’s going to be a nice game.”
On the subject of our fanbase, Jan feels the bond between those in the stands and the players on the pitch has grown stronger over the course of this exciting season.
“They (the supporters) have seen how hard we’ve worked on the training ground and we’ve shown that on the pitch,” he added. “That’s what they want to see and as players we want that support – in the less good times as well. I think the fans have tried and they have given us that and that’s how we have to continue.”
