Euro 2016 - Pat's pride

17 June 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

There is no prouder Northern Irishman than Pat Jennings this morning.

The legendary goalkeeper admitted to jumping out of his seat with delight as Niall McGinn secured a 2-0 victory against Ukraine deep into added time in Lyon.

It was Northern Ireland's first win in a major tournament since Pat helped them shock hosts Spain in the 1982 World Cup.

That was NI's second appearance in a major tournament following their run to the 1958 World Cup quarter-finals and they went on to qualify for the 1986 World Cup as well, Pat famously making the last of his 119 appearances for his country against Brazil on his 41st birthday in Mexico.

If those were the glory days, Pat is delighted to see the class of 2016 making history again.

This is Northern Ireland's first appearance in the European Championships and now their first win, sealed by McGinn after Gareth McAuley's earlier header.

"What a day!" said Pat, who was at NI's match against Poland in Nice on Sunday.

"Poland were better than us in the first game but what a recovery! What a performance! The team was absolutely brilliant.

"They must have been on a downer after the game on Sunday but what a way to bounce back.

"I was jumping up and down. It was a great team performance.

"We'll still probably need something against Germany but this result gives us hope. We're back in it."
