Euro 2016 - Jan expects tough Republic of Ireland test

17 June 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Jan Vertonghen expects a physical test for Belgium against the Republic of Ireland in a key Euro 2016 clash on Saturday.

Indeed, the defender is primed for a Premier League-style encounter, much like England against Wales on Thursday.

It's also a hugely important game in Group E. Belgium lost to Italy in their opener, while the Republic drew with Sweden. Italy followed up by beating Sweden on Friday, so victory for either team now in Bordeaux will go a long way towards qualifying for the knockout phase.

"The Republic of Ireland are made up mostly of Premier League players and they are a very good team in my opinion, a bit like Wales in many ways and Wales beat us last year," said Jan, who is joined by Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembele in the squad and started at left-back against Italy.

"We expect to play against a very strong team. They beat Bosnia to qualify and they had a strong team as well so that game is at least as hard as Italy for us. It’s a game with lots of power, strength in the air, and physical."
