Euro 2016 - Hugo exclusive from Paris

11 June 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

We asked Hugo Lloris if he would tell the Spurs family how it felt to win France's opener in Euro 2016 - and he replied just 90 minutes after the final whistle in Paris.

The France and Spurs skipper proudly led his country out against Romania in the Stade de France, made a magnificent point-blank save within five minutes and then spoke of his relief after Dimitri Payet's late, late strike secured a 2-1 victory.

We asked Hugo three questions, here's what he had to say..

Congratulations Hugo, tell us first - how did it feel to lead the team out on such an emotional night for your country and hear Le Marsellaise played before kick-off?
Hugo:
"Hello my friends! It was great feeling to start the tournament and not easy to manage our emotions! The national anthem was different than usual...but finally we won after a tight game and we feel proud of that."

What about the moment when Payet's winner flew in?
Hugo: "Payet had a great season with West Ham, he just confirmed his talent. This goal was amazing and the feeling difficult to describe, like a relief!"

Finally Hugo, how important was that win for the team and the whole of France?
Hugo: "The win is massive for our confidence. There was a lot of pressure on our shoulders before this opening game! Now we have both feet in the competition and focus on the next game. At this level there are no easy games. We expected that kind of game, tight with a lot of challenges. We need to keep this spirit and improve our football...step by step!"

Hugo will lead France out against Albania in Marseille on Wednesday (8pm UK).

The next Spurs interest at Euro 2016 is on Saturday as Ben Davies and Wales take on Slovakia (5pm UK) and our five players with England - Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Harry Kane, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker - face Russia (8pm, UK).
