Euro 2016 - blow for Belgian lads in opener

13 June 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen suffered defeat in Belgium's Euro 2016 opener against Italy on Monday night.

The defenders both started and completed the 90 minutes as Italy ran out 2-0 winners in Lyon. Jan was employed at left-back with Toby at centre-half. Mousa Dembele remained an unused substitute.

Sunderland's Emanuele Giaccherini opened the scoring for Italy in the first half before Southampton striker Graziano Pelle wrapped it up in added time.

The result leaves Belgium bottom of Group E after the Republic of Ireland and Sweden drew 1-1 in Paris.

Ireland are next up for the Spurs trio in Bordeaux on Saturday (2pm UK).
