Dier dreaming of Euro 2016

25 May 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Tuesday is D-Day for our five England players hoping to jet out to France for Euro 2016.

The signs are certainly positive as all five - Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Harry Kane, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker - started and completed a full shift as the Three Lions toppled Turkey in a friendly last weekend.

Next up is a friendly against Australia at Sunderland tonight (Friday, May 27) and then boss Roy Hodgson will trim his 26-man squad to 23 for the tournament on Tuesday. England kick-off against Russia on June 11.

For one of the five, a place in that first line-up in Marseille would complete an incredible journey over the last year.

Eric Dier was switched from his right-back and central defensive roles - where he played 36 times last season - to anchor the midfield during behind-closed-doors friendlies in pre-season last July.

He kicked-off the season in his new position at Old Trafford and impressed so much, he made it his own.

Eric went on to start 50 of our 53 matches in all competitions as we finished a best-ever third in the Premier League last term (his total tally 51 games), made his England debut against Spain in November, scored a dramatic late winner against Germany in March and is now seen as one of the first names on the teamsheet.

"If you’d have told me 12 months ago that I would be in this position right now I’d have thought you were crazy," he said. "It’s been a great 12 months and I’m really enjoying every minute of it.

"It would be an amazing achievement for me from where I was at the start of the season to be on the plane to the Euros. That would really cap a fantastic season."
