Our first match of this summer’s tour sees us meet Seattle Sounders FC for the first time. Sounders became the 15th Major League Soccer (MLS) team when it was established in November, 2007, and the three-time US Open Cup winners have a number of high-profile personnel involved on and off the field.

  • The team is owned by movie producer Joe Roth, former head of Disney and Fox Studios, local entrepreneur Adrian Hanauer, comedian Drew Carey and businessman, investor, and philanthropist Paul Allen. Mr Allen also owns NFL side Seattle Seahawks and NBA team Portland Trail Blazers.

seattle-ticketsTwo-time MLS Cup winner Sigi Schmid has been Head Coach of Sounders since the team’s inception. He was previously manager of LA Galaxy between 1999 and 2004 and has also had a two-year stint at the helm of Columbus Crew.

On the pitch, former Spur Clint Dempsey is one of a number of USA international players in the Sounders’ squad. Clint isn’t the only former Spur to have played for Sounders, either. Former Tottenham goalkeeper Kasey Keller also played for the CenturyLink Field-based club between 2009 and 2011.

The name Seattle Sounders was chosen by fans through an online poll in 2008. The team’s first choice colours are ‘Rave Green’ shirts and socks with ‘Sounder Blue’ shorts – although they’re set to wear their black third kit for our meeting on Saturday, July 19. Last year, Sounders became one of just three teams ever to reach the MLS play-offs for the fifth straight campaign.

Sounders also previously became the first team to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League in each of its first three years and is one of just four MLS teams to have reached the semi-finals of the tournament.
