Our legendary former midfielder agreed to the post after being approached by the club via Twitter.
England international Darren, who made 358 appearances between 1992-2004, explained the Washington DC link to us this week.
"I have friends in DC," he said. "I played in the Dallas Cup when I was 14, stayed with a family out there and I’ve been friends with them ever since.
"The Arlington Supporters Club knew I go to DC a lot and they asked via Twitter would I be Honorary President and I said ‘yes’. It was a simple as that, really.
"I’ve heard all about how popular the club is becoming in the States. The MLS has proved a success, the Premier League is everywhere on TV and the fans are starting to really get into it, which is fantastic."
Gary Brooks, Chairman of Arlington Spurs, explained: "It is fantastic that Darren agreed to be our Honorary President, and everyone associated with Arlington Spurs is delighted to have him involved. He is a THFC legend, and the fact he agreed with no hesitation not only demonstrates what a gentleman he is, but the affection he has for Tottenham fans.
"A good number of our members are English and have been following Spurs for 20-plus years and he was always one of our favourite players, but he is also someone the new generation of Spurs fans in America could connect with."
We've seen massive growth in the number of our Official Supporters Clubs around the world, particularly in America. We are proud to say that we awarded one new Supporters Club official status every week throughout last season, which is testament to our growing global fanbase.
ARLINGTON SPURS, USA
The Arlington Spurs Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Club was formed in 2012 by a group of fans from England and America whose obsession with Tottenham Hotspur has spanned the past three decades. We watch all the games and meet up regularly for social events, in Ireland’s Four Courts pub, which is easily accessible for anyone living in Arlington, Virginia.
