Spurs Ladies chase trophy treble

Newly-crowned champions Spurs Ladies aim for their third trophy of the season when they take on Charlton Athletic in the Capital Women's Cup at Wingate & Finchley FC on Tuesday night.

With the FA Women's Premier League South title and Boux Avenue (Ryman) Cup in the bag already, Spurs and Charlton face off for the second of three cup finals in a competition run between the London FA, Middlesex FA and Amateur FA.

Spurs go into the game on the back of a rare disappointment - they lost their unbeaten record in the FAWPL South to, you guessed it...Charlton on Sunday.

However, Karen Hills took the chance to rest a number of regular starters after memorably clinching the title at White Hart Lane last week. So Jenna Schillaci, Bianca Baptiste and Riana Soobadoo only played a part off the bench while Toni-Anne Wayne, Josie Green and Wendy Martin stayed on it.

There were positives, despite the 3-2 loss. Indeed, two popular squad players made their returns after long-term injury with Katie O'Leary and Shannon Moloney back after eight and five months out respectively. Andrea Georgiou also scored on her first team debut having moved up from the reserves.

"To be honest, we're all gutted to lose the unbeaten record in the league but we rested six players and it will be interesting now going into the cup final, because Charlton know those players will be available for us," said Karen.

"It was a chance to rest a few players and to give some of the girls who haven't played so much recently a chance and on top of that, it was great to see Katie and Shannon back.

"Things have gone so well all season and this was a bit of a reality check for everyone. Now we go again.

"One thing is for sure, the players will be doubly determined now. They want this trophy."

RESERVES CLINCH FAWPL DOUBLE

Congratulations to Spurs Ladies Reserves, who completed the FAWPL Reserve South championship and FAWPL Reserve League Cup double with a thrilling 3-1 win against Blackburn Rovers at Brackley Town FC on Sunday.

Spurs led early through Amy Makewell but had to recover from a late equaliser from Rovers taking the final into extra time.

Ronnell Humes then delivered with two goals in three minutes to secure the 3-1 victory.

Spurs Ladies' unbeaten record in the FAWPL ended on Sunday with former Spur Avilla Bergin scoring the crucial third goal for Charlton at New River Stadium.

Spurs led early after a bizarre own goal only for Charlton to level through Gemma Shepherd four minutes before half-time. Kit Graham made it 2-1 and Bergin added the third on 72 minutes. Debutant Andrea Georgiou gave Spurs hope of clawing it back but it stayed 3-2.

"I'm sure if we had another 10 minutes we'd have found an equaliser, but it wasn't to be," said manager Karen Hills. "We'll move on quickly. We train again on Monday and we'll be ready for the Capital Cup Final on Tuesday. We're looking for another big effort."
