U21S 5-1 WOLVES - FIVE-STAR SHOW IN THE SNOW!
Posted 14 January 2013 5:54pm
Our Under-21s kicked-off Phase Two of the Barclays U21 Premier League in style in the snow on Monday.
Goals from Jon Obika (2), Andros Townsend, Tom Carroll and Yago Falque put Wolves to the sword on a tricky, snow-laden surface at the new Training Centre.
The team scored 43 goals in 12 games on their way to winning National Group Two in the first half of the season and picked up where they left off in the opening match of the Elite Group.
Townsend opened the scoring on 11 minutes with a delighted free-kick, curled over the wall and into the top corner from 22 yards after Ryan Mason was upended.
Our short, sharp passing carved out a number of chances, most notably to Obika and Falque, who were denied one-on-one by Wolves goalkeeper Aaron McCarey.
Townsend also dipped a volley just over and then skied an effort from 12 yards while Obika rose well to meet Ryan Fredericks' cross, only to miss the target with his header.
At the other end, Wolves best chance fell to Liam McAlinden on the half-hour, but he was also off target from Jack Price's cross.
Into the second half and John Gorman headed an early chance wide for the visitors before the ball somehow stayed out at the other end as McCarey again got the better of Obika one-on-one and Mason's follow up was cleared off the line by Michael Ihiekwe.
Jonathan Miles blocked Gorman's shot from the left angle with his legs before another flurry of chances at the other end, Obika's diving header from Mason's cross flew just wide, McCarey tipped Townsend's low drive wide and the same player's 20-yarder looped past the post via a deflection.
The second goal arrived on 67 minutes as Townsend threaded a pass through to Carroll, who made no mistake from 12 yards.
Wolves responded five minutes later as McAlinden headed home from Jamie Reckford's cross.
Any threat of an unlikely comeback was soon ended as Obika finally struck, shooting low past McCarey from 16 yards after good work from Mason.
Obika was there again as the clock ticked into added time, a fine goal. Carroll switched the play wide left to Townsend, who beat his man and cut the ball back from the byline for Obika to sweep home from 10 yards.
Obika was involved in the fifth and final goal, pressing high up the pitch and opening up for Falque to curl low into the corner from 16 yards.
