Sinton Strikes For Legends
SINTON STRIKES FOR LEGENDS
Posted 27 June 2012 08:26am
The Spurs Legends team will be looking for a return to winning ways when they visit Basingstoke this Sunday (July 1).
Tony Galvin, Garry Brooke, Andy Sinton and Stuart Nethercott are among the names provisionally scheduled to represent the Lilywhites once again, as they take on Basingstoke Town Colts Legends.
The game takes place at Water End Sports Field, Basingstoke, RG24 7BA, with kick-off scheduled for 2pm. Tickets will be available on the day.
Sinton - pictured - was on target last weekend as the lads were held to a 2-2 draw against Alemite Athletic in Harlow.
They fought back from a goal down to lead 2-1, but a late header saw the honours end even.
Alemite started the game with a youthful side, and the Legends were thankful for the services of the ever-agile Chris Perry at the back alongside Stuart Nethercott.
It didn’t take long for Alemite to break down the Spurs resistance, though, as James Thomas’ effort was deflected in at the near post with 10 minutes on the watch.
Spurs goalkeeper Gareth Howells made a fine one-on-one block shortly afterwards, while at the other end, some good work involving Mark Stimson and Paul McVeigh ended with Sinton testing Alemite goalkeeper Adam Dalby from long-range.
Dalby somehow kept out a bullet header from McVeigh at his near post on 28 minutes, while at the other end, Perry heroically headed the ball off the line twice in quick succession following an Alemite free kick.
McVeigh later fired wide from outside the area, before Micky Jarrett seized on a loose ball down the left side and slotted the ball beyond Dalby to equalise four minutes before half-time.
By this time, Alemite had introduced a number of veterans into their side, who brought with them a change of pace.
Eight minutes after the break, following some excellent build-up play by McVeigh, Sinton slotted home to give Spurs the lead.
Sinton later surged through the midfield and got clear of the Alemite defence, but when he tried to curl the ball around the advancing custodian from a tight angle, the ball cannoned off the outside of the post and away for a goal kick.
Spurs hit the woodwork again, before Alemite’s Chris Bullock nodded home the equaliser on 82 minutes following a corner.
Both goalkeepers made low saves as the teams searched for a winner, but it proved elusive and the game ended all square.
