SHOULDER TO SHOULDER WITH ALL WHO SERVE - WHAT THE POPPY APPEAL MEANS
Posted 09 November 2012 11:21am
The team will wear special edition Poppy Shirts in this weekend’s clash with Manchester City - a game that falls on Remembrance Sunday.
All shirts will be signed by the respective player and auctioned off via the Club’s eBay and tottenhamhotspur.com, with proceeds going to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
The Club kicked off its support at last weekend’s home match with Wigan Athletic, when a collection was held around the ground and the teams were led out by members of the 2nd and 4th battalions of the Rifles regiment.
One of the servicemen present that day, Cpl Michael Pigeon, told us exactly what the work of the Poppy Appeal means to him and his comrades.
The lifelong Spurs supporter said: “The Poppy Appeal is important both to serving soldiers and those no longer serving, particularly injured soldiers and their families.
“Soldiers that have been injured in conflict sometimes find it difficult when they leave the Army, and the Royal British Legion do a lot of work that people do not know about to help them get on with their lives and back on track.
“It’s important for us, as soldiers, to know that, if anything was to happen to us, there is somebody there to look after us.
“Like many other soldiers, I have friends who have been injured or unfortunately lost their lives, and the British Legion have done some fantastic work to help their families through the difficult times that they face.
“A personal friend of mine has unfortunately been injured and, being a young lad, he found it difficult. But, thanks to the British Legion, he is finding his feet again.”
The Club would like to extend its appreciation to all fans at last Saturday’s game who took part in the minute’s applause before kick-off and kindly donated to the Poppy Appeal.
Cpl Pigeon re-iterated the sentiment, adding: “It’s fantastic to know that a massive club like Tottenham is showing its support for the Armed Forces because it makes us feel apprieciated.
“The way we were hosted at White Hart Lane on Saturday was absolutely fantastic - we could not have asked for any more. Being a massive Tottenham fan myself, it meant everything.”
