Gylfi Sigurdsson knows the ideal scenario in Lyon – an early goal.
We take on the Ligue 1 title-chasers in the second leg of our Europa League, Round of 32 tie at the Stade de Gerland on Thursday night. We kick-off at 7pm local time, 6pm UK.
Gareth Bale’s late, great free-kick secured a 2-1 advantage from last week’s first leg at the Lane and Gylfi is confident we can score what would be a vital away goal - just like we have in 17 of our 19 away matches this season.
“We always look capable of scoring, especially away from home and we’ve done that in almost every game,” said Gylfi.
“We’re confident we can go out there and get a goal or two and if we do, it will be a huge positive for us. If we get an early goal, things will be looking good.”
Gylfi is also well aware of the stern challenge Lyon will provide on home turf.
“They showed at White Hart Lane that they are a good team with talented, individual players who can cause some damage,” he added.
“I thought they started slowly in the first leg but they grew into the game and then scored an unbelievable goal. He (Umtiti) will probably never score another goal like that in his career! That shows we have to be aware of their quality and ready for them.”
