THE new West Stand was officially opened before this game as Wolverhampton Wanderers, Spurs' first League opponents 74 years earlier, came to town.

Just like that memorable day in 1908, Wolves returned to the Black Country on the back of a defeat but on this occasion they were ripped apart by a rampant Spurs side inspired by Glenn Hoddle and Rick Villa.

Hoddle converted a penalty after eight minutes to give Spurs the lead and on the half hour mark Villa doubled that lead with a magnificent swerving volley. The big Argentinean scored his second goal ten minutes later just before Kenny Hibbitt pulled one back for the visitors as Tottenham went in at half-time leading 3-1.

Villa completed his hat-trick ten minutes into the second half and Spurs then turned on the style with goals from Garth Crooks and Mark Falco to record Keith Burkinshaw side's biggest victory of the season.
