Mini Kickz Launches
MINI KICKZ LAUNCHES
Posted 27 February 2013 07:33am
A new programme for young people aged 5-11 years old living on the Ferry Lane Estate in Tottenham was launched by the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation last week.
Funded by the Postcode Trust, Mini Kickz builds on the highly popular Kickz sessions run by the Club’s Foundation across the London boroughs of Haringey, Waltham Forest and Enfield.
Kickz is a national programme which sees clubs work with the Metropolitan Police to engage with young people aged 12 - 16 years old in some of the country’s most disadvantaged communities.
The free sessions aim to break down barriers between Police and young people whilst providing social support and education to help reduce crime, anti-social behaviour, gang activity, alcohol and drug abuse.
Mini Kickz aims to engage with local young people at an earlier stage in life around health and wellbeing issues as well as helping to build community values and cohesion.
Club Ambassador, Ledley King attended the launch, taking part in a number of football drills with the young people.
He said: “Speaking to one of the coaches here, I was alarmed to know that even at the age of 10 or 11, young people are becoming involved in gang activity, and we need to do everything we can to prevent that happening.
“Working closely with the Foundation, I get to meet a lot of genuinely good kids but many lose their way in life mainly down to a lack of opportunities and boredom.
“Programmes like Mini Kickz gives children at a younger age the chance to play sport, meet friends, and stay active, which are all things that can contribute to a better future life.”
Using the power of sport and the appeal of a Premier League Club, both Kickz and Mini Kickz give young people the opportunity to play organised football and other sports along with taking part in dance, music and fashion workshops.
Ferry Lane is the first Mini Kickz session to launch providing much needed activities for 5 - 11 year olds in the area and continuing the Foundation’s commitment to the estate following the opening of the Cruyff Court multi-use games area last year.
Mini Kickz sessions run every Tuesday and Thursday, 4pm - 5.30pm, at the Cruyff Court on Jarrow Road, Ferry Lane Estate.
