Vedran Corluka predicts Luka Modric will get better and better with the benefit of a first season in the Premier League now under his belt.

Luka admitted that it took him time to adjust in the first few, tricky months of the season but his influence grew and grew, not least after settling into a left-sided role in the second half of the season.

The Croatian international won the praise of players and management alike, with boss Harry Redknapp insisting: "I think he's been brilliant for us, he's a world-class player."

Luka's Croatian compatriot Vedran agrees. "It was difficult at the start because it was his first time playing in England and nobody in the team was playing well at that point," said the versatile defender who started 39 of his 40 games last season.

"When the team started to play well he showed why he is one of the best young midfielders in the world.

"Hopefully he will be even better next season because he knows how other teams play against us and the surroundings, so it will be a lot easier."

Vedran was well-placed to comment on the difficulty of a first season for a foreign player in the Premier League after making that switch himself from Dinamo Zagreb to Manchester City a year earlier.

"It's hard for a foreign player at first because everything is so much faster than in other leagues, as well as the physical strength," he added.

"But after half-a-season, you are used to these things. If you have the same ability of the other players, then eventually you should be able to compete."

Gary Stevens recalls his key role during his playing days at Spurs in the latest issue of hotspur - out now.

The defender/midfielder who played 197 times for us between 1983-1990 is featured in the July edition of the club's official magazine.

"My job, particularly at Tottenham, was a team job," said Gary, who helped us lift the 1984 UEFA Cup and played in the 1986 World Cup Finals for England.

"While I wasn't short of ability, I wasn't a so-called 'flair' player. Therefore my role was to regain possession of the ball, pass to my team-mates in good positions and allow others to influence the game."

By 'others', Gary can list the likes of Glenn Hoddle, Paul Gascoigne, Ossie Ardiles and Chris Waddle.

Gary, who scored in the 1983 FA Cup Final for his first club Brighton, moved to Portsmouth before retiring in 1991.
Michael Dawson sat back to reflect on last season and admitted: "Everything happened."

The ever-popular and reliable defender was asked for this thoughts on the campaign for Spurs TV Online and reeled off his answer in one take!

So here are his thoughts - and remember, you can watch this interview alongside seasonal reflections from the likes of Jermaine Jenas, Heurelho Gomes, Vedran Corluka and Darren Bent on Spurs TV Online - CLICK HERE...

DAWS ON - the season as a whole...

"Everything happened this season, from the good, to the bad, to just the plain disappointing.

"It was an awful start to the season and everyone has to take full responsibility for that - only two points from eight games is unacceptable.

"Everyone had to take their share of the criticism and look at themselves, and I wasn't playing as many games as I would have liked at that time."

DAWS ON - Harry Redknapp's arrival...

"When Harry came in after eight games, things turned around for a couple of months and it was looking good again until we went through another bad patch.

"But it was always going to be an uphill battle after the start we made, so to get back in contention and climb up the table was good.

"I played quite a few games, which was very good from a personal point of view. I love playing football and that's what it boils down to at the end of the day.

"To come back from where we were to be in with a chance of qualifying for Europe on the final day makes it seem like a good season."

DAWS ON - how being bottom affects players away from the club...

"The start made personal life hard as well. You go home, walk down the street, go to the shops and everything's doom and gloom. That's being at the bottom of the table.

"It's absolutely awful to take from a professional point of view because you're not playing well as a team or as individuals - that's why we were in that position."

DAWS ON - the low point at Stoke...

"Stoke was a bad day for me (we lost 2-1 and had both Michael and Gareth Bale sent off), I hadn't been playing but I came on and was trying to do everything I could to get us back in the game.

"But frustration boiled over and I made an over-the-top tackle. I never went out to hurt him, it was just in the heat of the moment.

"Emotions were running high. We were bottom of the league and it was a difficult day to take.

"But we've bounced back. We looked around, a few words were said, and then Harry came in and turned it around.

"Everyone has got to take credit for the change from Stoke to where we ended up. Everyone stuck together through those hard times."

DAWS ON - the Carling Cup Final...

"We had good cup runs while climbing up the table, and the Carling Cup Final was a fantastic occasion.

"The semi-final was eventful both at home and away to say the least. We found ourselves 1-0 down having been outplayed by Burnley in the first 45 minutes at White Hart Lane.

"If we're honest, they probably had a mad 30 minutes which gave us the upper hand (we eventually won that first leg 4-1) until we went to Burnley.

"On an awful winter's night it was a tough place to go, but all credit to them - they were better than us and we were lucky to go through (we scored two late goals in extra time).

"When we woke up the next day, it wasn't about whether we were lucky or not - we were going to Wembley and that's all that counted at the end of the day.

"The Final at Wembley was the most amazing day and the worst day all rolled into one.

"It was a dream ever since I was a young kid to actually walk out at Wembley and play in a proper game.

"I went on a tour of the stadium about 15 years ago and at that time I never actually dreamt of ever going back there to play.

"It's such a special place, and to walk out for a cup final in front of 90,000 people was amazing - but we didn't win, so it made one of the most amazing days turn into one of the hardest to take in the space of two and a half hours.

"Credit to the lads, we played really well, but we lost the cup final and it was hard to take. But we moved on and climbed up the league."

DAWS ON - creating a new home defensive record of just 10 goals conceded in the league...

"The record was a great achievement for everyone. We weren't conceding too many goals at the start of the season, but we weren't winning the games either.

"You win together and lose together. We weren't scoring as many goals early on as we would've liked, but weren't keeping any clean sheets either, so it balances out.

"In the end, we started scoring and keeping clean sheets, so it made it all look a million times better.

"Everyone must take credit for the record, because we win games as a team and we're all down when we lose."

Double legend Terry Dyson turns the clock back 48 years to
reflect on a memorable win over Arsenal in July's issue of hotspur -
out now.

The 4-3 win against the old enemy at the Lane on
August 26, 1961 features as the 'Match of the Month' in the
club's official magazine.

Terry, who scored in the
double-clinching FA Cup Final win against Leicester City in 1961, made Spurs history against the
Gunners that day - and it's a personal milestone that still stands.

The
diminuitive winger became the first player to score a hat-trick for
Spurs against Arsenal and he remains the only Spurs player to do so. In
fact, only three players on both sides of the North London divide have managed it -
Terry, Ted Drake and Alan Sunderland.

"I get asked about that
game on a regular basis," said Terry, a welcome visitor to the Lane at

Jermaine Jenas was full of praise for Aaron Lennon's performances last season.

The winger was in flying form especially in the second half of the campaign with a stand-out display in the Carling Cup Final against United and important goals in key wins against Stoke, Hull and Middlesbrough as we climbed the Premier League.

His form earned a place back in the England squad for the friendly against Slovakia and World Cup qualifier against Ukraine in March and April - his start against Slovakia exactly two years after his previous cap.

It also earned a place on the shortlist for the PFA Young Player of the Year Award and a One Hotspur Members ‘double' of Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season.

"Aaron was brilliant," said JJ. "All the accolades and praise he received are well deserved.

"I'm one of his biggest fans. He worked really hard, played through injury towards the end of the season and did everything that was asked of him.

"I really can't say enough about the lad, his attitude and character. For me, he's the best right winger in England."

Tom Huddlestone agreed: "Apart from the last few weeks, Aaron was fully fit and he seemed more positive in his performances.

"Whenever he gets the ball, he wants to take his defender on, and he puts balls into dangerous areas where strikers can't help but get on the end of them."

Danny Rose's dream of playing a part in the European Under-21
Championship Final and bringing home a winner's medal ended in heartbreak on Monday night.

The midfielder was an unused substitute as the Three Lions were mauled 4-0 by Germany in the final at Malmo's New Stadium.

Gonzalo
Castro opened the scoring in the first half, Mesut Ozil doubled it
early in the second half and two late goals from Sandro Wagner made it
a tough night for Stuart Pearce's men.

Danny played in one of
England's five matches in Sweden but insists it's been a valuable
experience for him to be away with the squad at such a big tournament.

"It's
been great. I've learned something from every game and it's an
experience I wouldn't change for the world," said Danny, still just 18.

"Just being around a group of players like this improves you as a player, training is so fast and intense.

"Hopefully,
the management team at Spurs will also have seen that I did well in the
group game against Germany and that I've not been out of my depth at
this level and that can only benefit me as well."

JOY FOR GOMES

Heurelho
Gomes was also an unused substitute but delighted to pick up a winner's
medal as Brazil lifted the FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa on Sunday.

Back in the squad for the first time since 2006, the popular goalkeeper remained on the bench throughout the tournament with Inter Milan's Julio Cesar the number one.

A shock looked on the cards as the USA stormed into a 2-0 lead by half-time in Johannesburg but Brazil hit back with three goals in the second half to secure the trophy.

It was the second Confederations Cup medal for Gomes having been part of the successful Brazil squad in 2005.

Harry Redknapp has described his perfect Sunday to hotspur magazine - on sale now.

The manager answers a question from Aubrey Dhanraj of Hounslow in the popular 'View From...' Q&A feature in July's issue of the club's official magazine.

"A game of golf in the morning followed with a couple of mates, back home to watch the football in the afternoon and then out with Sandra for a bit of pasta - all with three points in the bag from the Saturday. Now that's the perfect weekend!" smiled Harry.

Harry is asked questions on all manner of subjects both on and off the pitch including his thoughts on meeting a number of the players from our famous double side at the West Brom game at the end of last season.

"They were fantastic, unbelievably great players. It was an amazing team and they will always be special players at Tottenham," he said.

There is also a question comparing the signing of Wilson Palacios to the arrival of Dave Mackay - seen by many as most important signing of Bill Nicholson's double side.

"If Wilson's anywhere near as good as Dave Mackay we'll be delighted," said Harry. "There are not many players in my lifetime who will come anywhere near Dave Mackay. Wilson is a terrific young player, a player we needed and I think he will only get better."

ELSEWHERE IN JULY'S HOTSPUR...

Danny Rose is hoping to play a part on the big stage as England take on Germany in the European Under-21 Championship Final in Sweden on Monday night.

Malmo's New Stadium plays host to the final kicking-off at 7.45pm UK time.

Attacking midfielder Danny has played in one of England's four matches so far, the final group game against the Germans last week. He made his first start at Under-21 level and completed the full 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw.

Danny didn't feature in the nerve-wracking semi-final win over Sweden on Friday, where the Three Lions led 3-0 at half-time only for the hosts to hit back and incredibly level it at 3-3 in the second half. There were no further goals in extra-time so it went to penalties with England taking the shoot-out 4-3.

The goalposts have changed somewhat for coach Stuart Pearce going into the final with strikers Gabriel Agbonlahor and Fraizer Campbell, plus goalkeeper Joe Hart, all suspended.

"Out of the five games so far and obviously apart from the group game against Germany, this is probably the one I'm most likely to feature in because we've lost Fraizer and Gabby," said Danny from Sweden on Sunday.

"If we need a goal in the game or another attacking option, we haven't those strikers to call upon, so hopefully I'll be in a good position to get involved."

Danny said the squad will take positives from the group game where Pearce rested a number of players yet England dominated, despite going behind early.

"We can't get complacent but we drew with them in the group stages when we didn't field our strongest team," he reasoned.

"We played very well that night and we started with the likes of myself and Jack Rodwell, both 18, and some of the lads hadn't played for a few weeks because the Championship ended earlier in May.

"We can't just think now that we've got the likes of Theo Walcott, James Milner, Mark Noble to come in we'll walk all over them, but it's certainly something in our favour.

"Germany are a good team with talented players but we outplayed them that night and we can be confident.

"As I said before, we don't fear anyone and we all believe we can win."

As for the semi-final, Danny went through all the emotions from the bench.

"I was sat right behind the manager, we were 3-0 up and I heard him say 'one more goal and it's safe' and I remember thinking to myself 'what do you mean, one more goal, we're 3-0 up' but look what happened.

"I got complacent, I thought it was all over at half-time and it just shows it's not over until it's over.

"Everyone thought it was over apart from the gaffer and that shows the experience he has, he knows what's what.

"It wasn't nice watching a 3-0 lead slip but the lads showed great character to come back and win the penalty shoot-out."

Would he have fancied taking a penalty, rather than watching it all unfold? "No, not really!" he laughed. "You never know though - it could happen again in the final."

Ledley King likes the way our pre-season is shaping up.

We have nine first team friendlies scheduled including competing in the Wembley Cup and the Barclays Asia Trophy in China.

We kick-off at Exeter City on July 15 and travel to Bournemouth (July 17) and Peterborough United (July 21) before the high-profile fixture against Barcelona in the Wembley Cup on July 24.

Our second game in the Wembley Cup is against Celtic on July 26 before we jet off to the Far East.

We kick-off in the Barclays Asia Trophy against West Ham on July 29 before facing either Hull City or Beijing Gouan two days later on July 31, both matches at the Worker's Stadium, Beijing.

We then travel to Hong Kong to take on South China FC at the Hong Kong National Stadium.

Our final friendly is against Olympiakos at the Lane on Sunday, August 9.

"It will be a test and that's what you want," stated Ledley.

"There is no point winning every game seven or eight-nil and then when you start the season, you have that sense of security, thinking things are perhaps better than what they are.

"What you need is a test against top-class players and we'll get that this summer. It's not just about winning in pre-season, it's about getting your performance right, tactics, fitness and making sure you're ready for the start of the season. That's all that really matters."
