Simon Dawkins’ life as a full-time member of our Academy staff could not have had a better start
The 16-year-old midfielder came off the bench to score the winning goal, in the young Spurs XI win at Hitchin Town in pre-season, when he netted in the last minute of our 1-0 victory in that opening warm-up game.
The Edgware-born first year Scholar — who lives and went to school in nearby Barnet - enjoyed an impressive season last term. Still a Schoolboy player, he scored six goals in nine starts for Jimmy Neighbour’s Under-17 side.
Simon made 11 substitute appearances at that level too, as well as a couple of substitute outings for the Under-19s. He was in Pat Holland’s Under-18 opener at Sunderland as well, where they lost 2-1 but were unfortunate not to come away with at least a point.
“Last season was great,” enthuses Simon. “I was also capped for England, for the Under-17s. It was tough, because a lot of the players were physically bigger and stronger than me, but I felt I handled it alright.
“It was brilliant playing against all the other different countries like Brazil, Spain, Holland and Germany, that experience was excellent.”
Simon is focusing his sights high for this coming season and is immediate in his response to the question: What are your aims for the new campaign?
“I am hoping to get into the Reserve team this season, definitely,” he declares with a big smile. “If I could make it as a regular at that level, progressing up again this season, that would be great.
“Then, hopefully, by the age of 18, I could be playing in the First Team!” Simon laughs.
If his ability matches his confidence, you certainly wouldn’t bet against it.
