Your Spur-fect XIs: Part 2

Posted on 4 June 2003  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Here is the second batch of your 'Spur-fect XIs' - the feature where we asked you to name your all-time Spurs Dream Team.

Keep your teams coming in and we'll endeavour to publish as many as we can.

Remember, the basic rules are straight 11 players of any Spurs era, 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 system, no substitutes. Feel free to include a brief write-up to explain why you picked your particular side.

Send your Spur-fect XI's by e-mailing it to us byclicking here and please remember to include your name...

From Marie Wilson: I picked this team because football is all about passing and scoring. On their day any member of this list would walk into any team in the world, because they could play. Hoddle, Gazza, Waddle and Ginola are four of the best passers I had the honour of seeing play and the two up front are the best finishers ever in the history of club and international football.

3-5-2: Jennings, Blanchflower, Knowles, Mabbutt, Hoddle, Gascoigne, Mackay, Waddle, Ginola, Greaves, Lineker.

From James Bowers: I'm 26 so my side is restricted to the last two decades and the attacking side is pretty much the team that started the second half of the Legends game in October. With stars like Hoddle, Perryman and Mabbutt up there with the greatest Spurs of all time.

4-4-2: Clemence, Carr, Hughton, Mabbutt, Perryman, Waddle, Hoddle, Gascoigne, Ginola, Sheringham, Klinsmann.

From Joe Broadfield: As I am only 18 I haven't seen many of the players in action but my selections are based on various sources such as video footage and old reports.

4-4-2: Jennings, Knowles, Mackay, Perryman, Ramsey, Gascoigne, Blanchflower, Hoddle, Waddle, Klinsmann, Greaves.

From David Dryer: 4-4-2: Jennings, Carr, England, Norman, Knowles, Blanchflower, Gascoigne, Hoddle, Mackay, Greaves, Klinsmann.

From Bruno Casciato: 3-5-2: Jennings, Mabbutt, Perryman, King, Roberts, Gascoigne, Ardiles, Hoddle, Ginola, Greaves, Klinsmann.

From Alex Gordon, Gerrards Cross: I am only 16 but I have gathered this from old videos and what the old guys around my seat say.

4-4-2: Clemence, Carr, Mackay, Perryman, Ziege, Waddle, Hoddle, Gascoigne, Nayim, Klinsmann, Greaves.

From Oliver Slipper: 4-4-2: Thorstvedt, Carr, Campbell, Gough, Thomas, Waddle, Gascoigne, Hoddle, Ginola, Klinsmann, Sheringham.

From Dave Regan, Sheffield: My team is based upon almost 40 years of supporting the club. I've gone for a team containing a number of qualities. These obviously include skill and the ability to play with style. I've also gone for some strong characters, that give the team some steel and determination. My team includes players like Cliff Jones, who could make goals, had pace and an excellent goal scoring record. This team would certainly take some stopping!

4-4-2: Jennings, Perryman, England, Mackay, Knowles, Peters, Hoddle, Gascoigne, Jones, Greaves, Lineker.

From John Taylor: I have been going to Spurs since 1980, so my choices are quite recent, some of which may not be too obvious but it is how I see it.

4-4-2: Clemence, Carr, Roberts, Gough, Hughton, Waddle, Gascoigne, Hoddle, Ginola, Lineker, Sheringham.

From Richard Jones: I' m 23 and have been watching Spurs since I was seven, therefore I am only including players who I have watched.

4-4-2: Clemence, Carr, Ziege, Mabbutt, Gough, Waddle, Hoddle, Gascoigne, Ginola, Lineker, Klinsmann.

From Steve Florence: If this doesn't make your mouth water you have never clung to the boardings at the front of the old shelf for hours on end! Pat shades it because I never saw Ditchburn play. A Welsh Mountain surrounded by Scottish defensive might. Balance guile, goals and work rate, the perfect midfield. Could they get the goals? Jim and Martin scored goals but not just goals, QUALITY goals.

3-5-2: Jennings, Gough, England, Mackay, Carr, Ardiles, Hoddle, White, White, Knowles, Greaves, Chivers.

From Leigh Borden: 4-4-2: Jennnings, Carr, Knowles, Roberts, Mabbutt, Waddle, Ginola, Hoddle, Ardiles, C Allen, Lineker.

From Michael Inglis: 4-4-2: Jennings, Clay, Mackay, Burgess, Knowles, Gascoigne, Blanchflower, Hoddle, Ardiles, Greaves, Klinsmann.

From Oliver Taylor: Playing with Lineker and Greaves pouncing on anything in the box with Klinsmann working as a bustling attacker.

4-4-2: Clemence, Carr, Ramsey, Blanchflower, Mabbutt, Mackay, Hoddle, Gascoigne, Greaves, Lineker, Klinsmann.

From Anthony Wood: This all-time greatest ever Spurs team would run rings round all opponents. With a great goalkeeper like Ditchburn, nice one Cyril and Ron Henry and the best two centre backs to play for Spurs, complete with the two naturals Gazza and Hoddle, the legendary Blanchflower and Ron Burgess this midfield would be awesome. As for the forwards say no more.

4-4-2: Ditchburn, Henry, Knowles, Mackay, England, Blanchflower, Hoddle, Gascoigne, Burgess, Chivers, Greaves.

From Paul Mills: I have based my 11 on players that I've actually witnessed in action rather than past greats. Unfortunately this has lead me to discard the likes of Greaves, Blanchflower, Mackay and White...

4-4-2: Clemence, Carr, Hughton, Mabbutt, Roberts, Ardiles, Hoddle, Ginola, Gascoigne, Klinsmann, Lineker.

From Martin Clark: What a difficult choice - so many names, so many memories! I have had the privilege of seeing every one of my selection in action over the years. Every time I make my choice, I think of someone I've left out! This lot would certainly be entertaining to watch and worth anyone's entrance money.

4-4-2: Jennings, Kinnear, England, Mackay, Knowles, Hoddle, Ardiles, White, Jones, Chivers, Greaves.

From Steven Lee: A team full of talent, grit and, naturally, my favourite players.

4-4-2: Clemence, Carr, Mabbutt, Perryman, Van der Houw, Jones, Blanchflower, Hoddle, Waddle, Greaves, Lineker.

From Angel Gaskin: How have I come to this XI? I think it´s romance more than anything else, I´m only young so I may not have included greats such as Jennings and Greavisie but I think this team could give anyone a run for their money.

4-4-2: Clemence, Carr, Perryman, Mabbutt, Hughton, Waddle, Hoddle, Gascoigne, Anderton, Sheringham, C Allen.

From Geoff Marson: This is a very attacking team so not surprisingly I have gone for the best goalkeeper Spurs have ever had plus a central defence that can defend well at set pieces as well as repel counterattacks by opponents. Going forward however there are plenty of options with Knowles and Carr encouraged to get forward down the flanks and Hoddle and Gascoigne working together to set up plenty of opportunities for the front pairing of Klinsmann and Sheringham. The pairing of Jurgen and Teddy worked very well and it was a shame that these two couldn’t have had more seasons together as undoubtedly they would have scored hundreds of goals between them.

3-5-2: Jennings, Campbell, Gough, Mabbutt, Knowles, Hoddle, Gascoigne, Mackay, Carr, Sheringham, Klinsmann.

From Chris Haughton: 4-4-2: Keller, Carr, Mabbutt, Campbell, Knowles, Hoddle, Mackay, Gascoigne, Blanchflower, Greaves, Lineker.

From Chris Knights: I based my picks on entertainment, either for their ability on the ball or in front of goal or the comedy aspect of their game! As a Spurs fan, and I hope many would agree, that even if the results don't go our way it's acceptable if we have been entertained.

4-4-2: Thorstvedt, Carr, Gough, Roberts, Thomas, Waddle, Gascoigne, Hoddle, Metgod, Klinsmann, Lineker.

From Orlando Jouval: 3-5-2: Jennings, Mabbutt, Campbell, Mackay, Waddle, Jones, Hoddle, Gascoigne, Ardiles, Greaves, Lineker.

From Steven Abrahams: I believe this is the Spurfect 11 of the last 35 years - solid defence, attacking, entertaining midfield, lethal strikeforce.

3-5-2: Jennings, Mackay, Norman, Perryman, Waddle, Carr, Gascoigne, Hoddle, Ardiles, Sheringham, Greaves.

From Andy Downe: 3-5-2: Jennings, Campbell, Richards, Mabbutt, Carr, Gascoigne, Hoddle, Ardiles, Ughton, Klinsmann, Lineker.

From Tony Skittleking: 3-5-2: Jennings, Blanchflower, Campbell, Mabbutt, Hoddle, Ginola, Gascoigne, Ardiles, Anderton, Lineker, Sheringham.

From John Scott: All of these players have given me a lot of pleasure, most duting the early 1980s. My first game was in 1979. I believe these players epitomise the Tottenham tradition of flair but I've also included one or two who liked a tackle!

4-4-2: Jennings, Knowles, Roberts, Gough, Carr, Galvin, Ardiles, Hoddle, Waddle, Lineker, Klinsmann.

From Matt Cornish: Carr is the only current player Keane and Davies may make the list soon. I remember fondly Hoddle and Waddle - together they were awesome. Tough one between Teddy and Jurgen, but the German was possibly a bit more exciting to watch even if he's not as good as reading the game as Sheringham. An elderly friend of mine insists Tommy Clay was one of the best we've ever had so I stuck him in too.

4-4-2: Jennings, Carr, Clay, Mabbutt, Mackay, Blanchflower, Gascoigne, Hoddle, Waddle, Greaves, Klinsmann.

From David Dunphy: 4-4-2: Jennings, Carr, England, Mabbutt, Knowles, Mackay, Blanchflower, Gascoigne, Hoddle, Greaves, Chivers.
