Your Lane specials: Part 1

Posted on 8 October 2003  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Darren Anderton said Fredi Kanoute's wonder strike against Everton was one of the best he'd seen at the Lane - so we asked you to name your Lane specials.

Thanks again for a typically tremendous response - here is the first batch of replies...

From Chris Vinton-Horsley: Steve Carr's goal against Man United a couple of years back and Ziege's screamer against the lot up the road last season.

From Andy Maynard: 1) Glenn Hoddle volley against Nottingham Forest early 80s, following goalie's kick.
2) Glenn Hoddle curler against Bolton, 77/78 (promotion season).
3) Alan Mullery header against Wolves, UEFA Cup final, 1972.
4) Jimmy Greaves direct free-kick against Liverpool, late 60s.
5) Jimmy Greaves dribble against Newcastle, late 60s.

From Lee Gruskin: How about our first goal against FC Porto in the Cup Winners Cup in 1991? It was the build up more than the strike by Gary Lineker that was memorable. About 30 consecutive passes with some lovely one touch play from Paul Allen and Pat Van Den Hauwe culminating in Lineker doing what he does best, beating the keeper from close range. Watching it back on TV the commentator described it as pin-ball football. A true Tottenham goal!

From Clive Bumpus: Being somewhat older than a lot of your contributors I have seen several great goals. The best of the lot without any hesitation was by the maestro himself Jimmy Greaves against Leicester many years ago. Pat Jennings threw the ball out to Greaves he pulled it down just inside his own half and then went on a mazy dribble beaten half the Leicester team before typically drawing the keeper walking round him before slotting the ball into the net. Jimmy Greaves was the best, but this was Jimmy Greaves at his best, absolutely awesome. Sadly I don't believe anyone has a recording of this.

From Lee Ladd: Fredi's goal is ONE of the greatest scored at the lane and there has been few but my favourite which I'm sure was at the lane was Glen Hoddles last goal for Spurs against Oxford. It wasn't a wonder strike like fredi's but it was pure class.

From Kevin Power: Glenn Hoddle's volley I think against Notts Forest could be mistaken. Goaliekicks it out and within seconds its in the back of the net from a fiercesome volley from the right.

From Paul Douglass: Stephen Carr a few years ago against Man U and Zeige beating Seaman, the free-kick last year against Arsenal.
