Your 100 Greatest Spurs Moments: No.3

Posted on 7 July 2003  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

We countdown the top 10 of our 'Your 100 Greatest Spurs Moments' as voted by the fans last summer.

WE PUT together the 'Greatest Spurs Moments' series last summer expecting, as always, a huge response - but we didn't expect the variety of moments that we would receive.

In the end, the series was changed to 'Your 100 Greatest Spurs Moments' but we've realised that we will not be able to run every one.

So we've put together a list of the top 100 moments - found below - and will run the top 10, as voted by you, over the next two weeks.

Thanks again for your terrific response...

Dateline: May 23, 1984
Venue: White Hart Lane
Match: UEFA Cup Final, second leg, Tottenham Hotspur 1 Anderlecht 1 (aggregate 2-2, Spurs won 4-3 on penalties)

Into the top three and perhaps the greatest glory, glory night White Hart Lane has seen - the UEFA Cup triumph of 1984.

Two men were hailed as heroes on the night - goalkeeper Tony Parks and skipper Graham Roberts.

It could have been such a different story after Anderlecht took the lead but with time running out, Roberts, who led by example, grabbed the precious equaliser.

It stayed 1-1 on the night, 2-2 on aggregate through extra time and so onto a penalty shoot-out to decide the winners.

Danny Thomas missed his spot kick but never mind, up stepped Parks to parry Arnor Gudjohnsen's final penalty to set the Lane alight!

Here are your memories...

Nothing comes close to the 1984 UEFA final. It was at White Hart Lane and there was an atmosphere there that night that you could cut with a knife. We had the most exciting team in the country, we were the pride of North London and we had done the business in the 1st leg. Hadn't we? This was one of the great terrace nights. Standing on the Shelf, you could barely breathe - everyone was there. The game was fast and aggressive and we were expectant. What we didn't expect was an away goal! Never thought we would give in though. That team had not won the FA cup twice just to surrender the UEFA cup without an almighty fight. My memory is of Graham Roberts. He was colossal that night and he willed the equaliser. We are used to penalties these days, but not then. The tension, the 'will they bottle it?' fear. The surge when Tony Parks beat out that penalty lifted me clean off the ground and sent my glasses flying into the mass ahead of me - never to be seen again. I couldn't see a thing travelling home in the drizzle - and I didn't care. There is nothing like a final at home and probably will never be again. I am so glad I was there. Michael Lock.

My best Tottenham moment of all time is one that a lot of people will go along with I'm sure, but it was just the atmosphere of the whole night and the fact that it was my favourite player of the time - Graham Roberts's goal in the 1984 UEFA Cup Final 2nd leg at home. I can still hear my old man screaming at him to head it, the way he took it on the chest and thumped it in on the half volley! MAGIC! Graham Joyce.

My greatest Spurs moment that I have been to has to be the UEFA Cup Final 2nd leg at White Hart Lane in 84. I don't know how but my family got tickets at the Paxton Road end. It was unbelievable watching Tony Parks make that penalty save from behind the goal. We were all standing on our seats and cheering with everyone around us. It was a fantastic party atmosphere. Ricky's goal in 81 will go down in history as the best ever though. Gary Brownjohn.

The 1994 UEFA Cup Final - you could cut the tension with a knife. Graham Roberts' late equaliser, extra time and the dreaded penalty shoot out. Finally Tony Parks wonderful penalty save. One of the best nights at the Lane. Andrew Whickmott.

My greatest moment would have to be the 1984 UEFA Cup Final 2nd leg at the Lane. I was 16 and stood with my dad in the Paxton Road End behind the goal where Tony Parks made 'that' save. It was a typical tense European night, full of atmosphere. When we scored near the end to take it into extra time everyone went ballistic like I'd never known before, and that penalty shoot out seemed to last forever. I'll never forget I watched all the penalties except for Danny Thomas. I closed my eyes and just waited for the eruption It did not happen of course and just for a minute you had to wonder. then came Parks save with the very next penalty and I went to heaven! It's so sad that since then we have never had a real good run in Europe. The five year ban for English clubs the following year was hard to take, especially as the team we had in the mid to late eighties would have done the business in Europe. Still, our time will come again! Peter Matthews.
