Your 100 Greatest Spurs Moments: 93

Posted on 13 November 2002  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Welcome to number 93 of our series Your Greatest Spurs Moments - a collection of memories from you, the fans.

Next up, with Arsenal just around the corner, we go back seven years and recall a derby day to remember at the Lane courtesy of Chris Armstrong.

Number 93: Premier League, Spurs 2-1 Arsenal, November 18, 1995

ARMSTRONG SHOOTS DOWN GUNNERS

Chris Armstrong will never forget his first North London derby.

Pressure had been mounting on the club's new £4.5million striker after a lean spell in front of goal following his summer switch from Crystal Palace.

He eventually broke his duck in the League Cup against Chester City and was starting to get on a roll following successive Premiership strikes against Everton and Newcastle United.

That roll was soon to gain speed in a dream derby debut for the striker.

Things didn't start well as Dennis Bergkamp put Arsenal in front after 14 minutes. But we hit back through Teddy Sheringham and then came Armstrong's moment as he held off Steve Bould before firing home the winner from the edge of the area.

Armstrong recalled: "I was delighted to put us in front and remember just running off when it went in. There was a real buzz in the dressing room afterwards. It was a real boost to win that one."

The victory helped pave the way for a successful second half of the season as Armstrong and Sheringham bagged 46 goals between them, Armstrong contributing 22.

Armstrong added: "So many fans came up to me and said no matter what happened for the rest of the season, this was the one they wanted to win.

"The game means so much. It is all about pride and being able to walk into work with your head held high.

"It was my first derby and I soon senses a different atmosphere. I'd played in plenty of derbies but nothing compared to that atmosphere."

The Spurs line-up that day: Walker, Austin, Calderwood, Mabbutt, Campbell, Fox, Dozzell, Howells, Rosenthal (McMahon), Sheringham, Armstrong.

This was the Greatest Spurs Moment of Ian McNamara.

Here are his memories of the day...

Although there have been many great games in the history of Spurs, one of my best memories was the Spurs v Arsenal league game in the season 1995-96. It was mid-november and very cold.

This game was my first ever Spurs v Arsenal derby and it was an amazing experience.

It was a classic derby game as Arsenal took the lead on 15 minutes, it looked like three points to the enemy but in true Spurs style we fought back and won the game 2-1.

It was an amazing journey home for my wife and myself and a memory I will always remember.

Look out for the next Greatest Spurs Moment, coming soon...

This is not a countdown of your greatest moments in descending order according to votes - numbers 100-10 are being picked at random from all of the memories collected. However, we will publish the top 10 most popular moments in terms of votes when we reach that stage of the series...
