Your Greatest Spurs Moments -
a collection of memories from you, the fans.
Next up, with Leeds at the Lane on Sunday, we go back to February 24, 1999 and recall one of David Ginola's finest performances in a Spurs shirt.
Number 92: FA Cup fifth round replay, Spurs 2-0 Leeds United, Wednesday February 24, 1999
GINOLA'S MAGNIFIQUE DISPLAY
To say it was one of the best displays David Ginola produced in Spurs shirt is quite a statement, but few fans who witnessed this fifth round replay will forget it.
Ginola was in his pomp, on his way to to a Footballer of the Year double and a Wembley appearance in the League Cup Final and the great entertainer of the Premiership.
He could have scored one of the great hat-tricks on the night. One dribble will always stand out, when he moved across the length of the area before shooting back in the direction he came from, only for Nigel Martyn to flick the ball onto the post with the slightest of touches.
The Frenchman also fizzed a shot onto the crossbar before finally grabbing his reward, a clean, crisp volley from a ball that came out of the skies before it flew into the bottom corner.
That was the second and deciding goal on the night after Darren Anderton's thunderbolt from fully 30 yards into the top corner put us ahead.
This moment was voted for by a number of fans and was actually in the top 20.
Here are just two of the memories...
Robert Sumner: I have been attending Spurs since 1988 and have been to all of our cup finals during that time. However, for me, the greatest display I have ever seen has to be the FA Cup replay against Leeds in the 98-99 season. The day David Ginola ran the show. Ginola was the ultimate player that season, but in that match for 90 minutes we witnessed a display that may never be surpassed. He should have had a hat-trick, hitting the post twice, as he carved up the Leeds defence liked a knife through butter, but in the end we had to settle for a sweet volley. However I also have to mention Darren Anderton's goal that day which was superlative a 30-yard effort, which was goal of season. A great match.
Steve Allin: All cup finals from the past are very special but my most memorable moment is from the 98-99 season when we played Leeds United in the FA Cup. We won the game 2-0 with Darren Anderton firing from 30 yards and Ginola scoring, capping one of his finest performances in a Spurs shirt. Although the goals were memorable it was Ginola's run which started on the right and he just kept running across the penalty area, taking on a few players before launching a ferocious left footed shot that Nigel Martyn just got his fingers to and it hit the post. Had it gone in, it would have been one of the best goals I've ever seen. Ginola was that night and still is...awesome.
