Your Greatest Spurs Moments -
a collection of memories from you, the fans.
Next up, we turn the clock back almost 41 years and recall Jimmy Greaves' stunning debut after joining us from AC Milan.
Number 91: Football League Division One, Spurs 5-2 Blackpool, December 16, 1961
GREAVSIE OFF THE MARK IN STYLE
It was Jimmy Greaves' debut after Bill Nicholson brought him back into English football for a then record fee of £99,999, the fee specified to avoid him becoming the first £100,000 player.
Would the pressure be on? What could Greaves add to this double-winning side? It was never in doubt, of course, as Blackpool would find out.
Greavsie bagged a hat-trick in his first game for us before setting goalscoring standards that surely will never be toppled at the club with a record 266 goals in 380 games.
He went on to score in the final as we retained the FA Cup and were only pipped to a double-double by Alf Ramsey's Ipswich Town, who claimed the title. Bill's boys also reached the semi-finals of the European Cup that season.
European success wasn't far away for Greaves and the club though, a memorable triumph followed in the 1963 Cup Winners' Cup, Greaves on target twice in the final.
Greavsie's debut is the Greatest Spurs Moment of Donald Manktelow.
Here are his memories...
The 16th of December 1961. The little man Jimmy Greaves brought back from AC Milan for 99.999 pounds sterling. He scored a hat trick, including the famous bicycle kick, followed by plenty more that season. I WAS THERE! I now live in Canada.
