Your 100 Greatest Spurs Moments: 88

Posted on 9 January 2003  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Welcome to number 88 of our series Your 100 Greatest Spurs Moments - a collection of memories from you, the fans.

Everton's arrival at the Lane this weekend will no doubt prompt memories of a famous first home goal for one of the club's all-time greats.

Number 88: Premiership, August 24, 1994, Spurs 2-1 Everton

Everyone remembers Jurgen Klinsmann's first goal for the club and that fantastic, ironic, 'diving' celebration at Sheffield Wednesday.

Thankfully, for those unable to witness first hand that magic moment at Hillsborough, there was a repeat performance at the Lane just four days later as the brilliant German inspired a second-successive Premiership victory.

And what a fantastic goal as well - a head-high overhead kick into the top corner.

Jurgen, back at the Lane this season for the Tottenham Tribute Match, recalled that night back in August 1994. "It was just as special at the first one. It was continuing the story from the week before because Teddy Sheringham's son Charlie, he was little at that time, he asked if we could do the dive again if we scored.

"Then I scored with such an unusual goal and the whole team ran over - I still remember Ian Walker running all the way down and joining in. My little boy has seen it on the video tape and he loves to watch it now and again because of all the guys jumping around."

Quite a few fans wrote in with this goal as their greatest moment - here are two of them.

Paul Mills: This is one of the few moments in my life when I can honestly say that the hair stood up on the back of my neck. The genius that the man demonstrated in the execution of the overhead kick alongside the humour of the goal celebration are I'm sure remembered by all there that night. Will we see the likes of him at the Lane again?

Christopher Simpson: My favourite moment was Jurgen Klinsmann scoring with an overhead bicycle kick against Everton during my first ever trip to White Hart Lane. I was sitting in the Paxton at the time and the goal looked like it was in slow motion, a great start to our first home game of the season.
