Number 100: Tottenham v Newcastle United, League Cup, 1976
BIG PAT'S GREAT SAVE
Legendary goalkeeper Pat Jennings made many memorable saves in his Spurs career - but one sticks in the mind of Lee Parsons.
It came in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final against Newcastle United at the Lane in January 1976. We won that leg 1-0 but, unfortunately, lost out at St James Park.
Lee tells the story of his Greatest Spurs Moment:
"My greatest memory as a young Spurs fan would have to be my hero Pat Jennings' fabulous save in the semi-final of the League Cup against Newcastle in the 70's. The game was shown as highlights on Sportsnight and as I recall Spurs won 1-0 but lost the second leg at St.James Park. The moment came as Newcastle attacked, the ball fell to Tommy Craig who caught the ball left-footed on the volley in the area. Jennings was alert to the danger and came off his line quickly and as the ball flew towards him he palmed it over the bar and was hit backwards into a roll by the velocity of the shot. Absolutely fantastic from Spurs greatest keeper and the world's!"
Pat, still coaching the keepers at Spurs Lodge, also remembers his save well.
"Yes, I remember that one," he said. "And the fact that people have written in about it makes it all the more special."
