A late penalty denied our Academy and Development squads a winning double in friendlies in Lille, France, on Wednesday.
An Under-21 team impressed in a 2-0 victory in their game against the Championnat side and the Under-17s looked to be heading for victory as well until a penalty awarded for handball two minutes from time allowed the home side back in for a 1-1 draw.
Nevertheless, Academy Manager John McDermott and Under-18s coach Alex Inglethorpe were pleased with how the two teams equipped themselves.
John takes up the story for the Under-21s. "We were excellent in the first half and deserved to go 2-0 up.
"The first goal came from Alex Olsen (pictured) after good work by Andros Townsend while the second was a set-play with Yuri Berchiche getting on the end of Adam Smith's free-kick.
"We made a few planned changes at half-time and we didn't match our passing and movement of the first half but defended extremely well and deserved out clean sheet."
Alex was with the Under-17s and reported: "It was a good performance and the ideal opportunity to look at some of our Under-16s players in this environment.
"We had a couple of good chances in the first half but it stayed 0-0 and we took the lead after the break, a great goal on the counter-attack that ended with Paul-Jose M'puku crossing for Ryan Fredericks to score.
"The lads started to tire a little in the last 25 minutes and Lille came back into it but we hung on to the lead until the 88th minute when they were awarded a penalty for handball.
"We were unlucky not to hold on for the win but overall it was a great experience for all the players."
