Our young Academy team pushed Cardiff all the way but ended up on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline on Saturday.

Four Under-16 players started again this week in the Under-18 team against an older Cardiff team in the Premier Academy League fixture at Spurs Lodge.

The lads started well and were rewarded in the 21st minute when Jack Barthram was brought down and skipper Laste Dombaxe converted from the penalty spot.

However, another key penalty decision went against the team when Shaq Coulthirst looked to be fouled in the area but appeals were this time waved away.

The scoreline was 1-0 at that point and at half-time but the visitors from Wales turned it around the second half as goals after 51 and 70 minutes secured the points.

Coach Alex Inglethorpe reported: "This is going to sound like the same old story but we're seeing real improvement from the team each week and the results aren't reflecting the performances.

"I was delighted with the performance, especially in the first half.

"We played very well against a much older side and controlled the game for long periods.

"We might have had a penalty when Shaq was fouled with the score at 1-0 and if we'd been awarded that, scored and gone 2-0 up, it would have been a real confidence boost for what is a very young side.

"But that didn't go our way and Cardiff turned it around with two excellent finishes.

"On both occasions we turned the ball over, so both goals could have been prevented and they'll learn from that.

"Overall though, again, I was very pleased. We ended up playing five Under-16 players, while Cardiff fielded two Under-19s. That makes a difference at this level, but they coped well for long periods.

"As I said before, they will learn from this experience and I'm confident the team will start surprising a few teams after Christmas."
