After a stint on the bench Thelwell was plucked from the reserves for his Premiership debut and played a starring role in our win against Liverpool.
It was the same story for Young two years ago when manager George Graham, facing a defensive crisis, handed him a shock first-team debut against West Ham.
Young has been in the first team squad since and believes it can be the same story for both Thelwell and Ledley King, who made his first Premiership start of the season after injury.
“Alton and Ledley were brilliant,” said Young. “I thought it might be difficult for Alton playing on the left because he’s right footed but he slotted straight in. Ledley was outstanding in midfield and looks like he’s got so much time on the ball.
“Hopefully the gaffer can continue playing the young lads. We showed out there today that we want to play for the club. That’s all you can ask.”
Meanwhile Young excelled again in his sweeper’s role up against the lethal partnership of Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler.
He added: “It took me about 10 minutes to get into the flow of the game but I thought we did alright. You can’t give them a split second because they arte always looking to get on your shoulder and get behind you. I thought the three lads at the back handled it well.”
Luke Young knew exactly how Alton Thelwell felt on Sunday.
