Almost 20 years after becoming our first overseas mascot, Per Kristian Nielsen was back at the Lane for the recent encounter against Chelsea.

The memories certainly came flooding back for Per Kristian, who attended the match with his father, Reidar.

Per Kristian was mascot against Watford in May, 1985, back in the old First Division.

“I remember so many things about that day,” said Per Kristian. “I got to meet all the players in the dressing room, got all their autographs and I remember Gary Mabbutt being a great guy, he really took care of me.

“I didn’t know much English back then and I was very star-struck, so I didn’t really say much to the players.

“I remember the crowd, warming-up with Gary and I was trying to play so well. I was nervous to make a mistake with the ball! I was thinking maybe a scout would be watching! It was an amazing experience and it’s great to be back.”

Meanwhile Per Kristian, who is recovering from lung cancer, backed our support of the NHS’s ‘Get to know cancer’ campaign. “I think it’s wonderful campaign for the club to support, very worthwhile.”
