The pair met at Lord’s to help Investec, official sponsor of our cup competition shirts, promote the Investec Ashes Series against Australia this summer.
A huge cricket fan, Michael was soon padded up and ready to face the England paceman – who thankfully was just in control of the bowling machine at Lord’s, rather than steaming in off the run that has bagged 390 wickets for England in all formats, including 183 in Tests.
“He coped really well,” said Stuart. “I was quite surprised, actually. He struck the ball really hard and straight, which was great to see. The only real weakness I could find was the change of pace, if I changed it to a slower ball, he was already looking for a six over the bowler’s head! Apart from that, he was really good.”
“It’s been a while since I had hold of a cricket bat,” said Michael. “Stuart was chucking a ball out (of the bowling machine) at 90mph and I didn’t even see it! It was great to experience that. It just shows how good these lads are, they have special talent.
“I did manage to hit a few balls, but that was only when I changed (the machine) from 90mph to 65!
“I’ve loved my cricket from a young age, being a Yorkshireman, and it’s great to come down and see Stuart. I’ve not been to Lord’s before. Hopefully I’ll get down to see England in the Ashes. It’s a special place.”
