Cameron Lancaster was also on target for us, but each time we took the lead we were pegged back by the visitors on a wet afternoon at the Training Centre.
Ruben Lameiras saw an early effort deflected behind for a corner, while Roman Michael-Percil produced a low stop from Colchester’s goalkeeper after a neat build-up involving Ryan Fredericks and Cameron Lancaster.
We were unlucky not to take the lead in the 23rd minute as Colchester’s stopper made a double save to deny Michael-Percil and Lancaster in quick succession, while our goalkeeper Jonathan Miles tipped over at the other end.
We took the lead on 39 minutes when Shaq Coulthirst switched play to the right with Michael-Percil who set up Lancaster to force the ball home amid a crowded area.
Miles made a spectacular diving save to deny Colchester a leveller shortly before the half-time – and with sweeping changes made at the break it was only our goalkeeper and midfielder Giancarlo Gallifuoco who remained from the first half side as the second period got underway.
Colchester levelled in the 54th minute when Andrew Bond finished well from a central position after we cheaply gave possession away following a throw-in, but we were back in front four minutes later as Coulibaly scored from the penalty spot after being brought down as he surged into the box.
The visitors drew level for the second time on 69 minutes when Macaulay Bonne chipped substitute goalkeeper Liam Priestley from a tight angle, but five minutes later we went ahead for the third time when Coulibaly steered home Darren McQueen’s left wing cross after making a near post run and getting just in front of his marker.
We looked set to retain the advantage until the final whistle, but three minutes from time Bonne popped up in the box to smash home his second of the game following a corner to restore parity once again.
