Our Development squad enjoyed their first pre-season friendly on home soil and saw off a Sunderland side 3-0 at Spurs Lodge on Friday afternoon.
Having returned back from the Algarve with a win over Nottingham Forest and a draw with Brighton under their belts, Tim Sherwood’s side welcomed the Black Cats to our training facility and continued their pre-season campaign with a fine victory.
The lads were impressive throughout, dominating in terms of possession and chances created and Ben Alnwick in goal was rarely troubled against his former club.
We opened the scoring with a delightfully well-worked move down the right flank. Kudus Oyenuga slid the ball down the line to Nathan Byrne, whose excellent first touch took him past the defender and he crossed for Alex Pritchard to poke home at the near post.
After a couple of half-chances came and went, Pritchard doubled our lead, this time from the penalty spot. Having been bundled over in the area, the midfielder picked himself up and took the spot-kick, driving it high into the top right of the net.
Sunderland, coached by former Spur Stephen Clemence and including the likes of Nyron Nosworthy and George McCartney in the side, did have the ball in the net shortly before the interval but it was ruled out for offside.
Despite a raft of half-time substitutions, we continued to call the shots after the break and it was one of those replacements who added our third. There seemed little danger when left-back Kevin Stewart picked up the ball, but he was allowed to run unchecked to the edge of the area, before drilling low into the corner.
The Development squad continue their preparations tomorrow with another pre-season friendly, against Barnet at Underhill.
