Argentina take on Germany in football’s biggest match at the Maracana Stadium (8pm UK) and Mauricio - capped 20 times by Argentina, including appearing at the World Cup in 2002 - is hoping to see Lionel Messi lift the trophy in Rio.
“I hope Argentina win because it’s very important for football in Argentina,” he said.
“I think Germany deserve to win as well because they have showed they are the best team in the World Cup.
“But football is football, it’s a final, it’s one game and Lionel Messi is the best player in the world, so anything is possible. I just hope Argentina win the trophy.”
Mauricio enjoyed a visit from a man who knows what it’s like to lift the trophy for Argentina - our legendary former midfielder Ossie Ardiles, 1978 winner, who joined us at the Training Centre on Friday.
“I was very happy to meet Ossie, he’s a legend and a brilliant character,” he added. “We spoke, he gave me some advice, that’s important and he loves Tottenham. For me, it was a pleasure to meet him.”
