Work of Vaart!

Two-goal hero Rafa van der Vaart said last night’s incredible 3-3 draw ‘felt like a victory’ – but soon switched his focus to West Brom on Saturday.

The Dutchman returned to the scoresheet in spectacular style as we came from two goals down against the Gunners for the second time this season.

Rafa scored as we came from 2-0 down to famously win 3-2 at the Emirates in November and this was no-less thrilling.

Theo Walcott fired the Gunners into an early lead but we responded in minutes as Rafa controlled Vedran Corluka’s pass before drilling into the bottom corner.

But we then conceded two goals as Samir Nasri and Robin Van Persie handed the visitors a 3-1 lead.

Thankfully, Tom Huddlestone responded with as sweet a strike as you’ll see from 25 yards to haul us back into the game at 3-2 just before the interval.

Rafa was denied by Wojciech Szczesny before getting better of the keeper from the penalty spot to make it 3-3 in the 71st minute.

Szczesny then had to be at his best to deny Peter Crouch, Luka Modric and Sandro as we went after another famous win.

It wasn’t to be on this occasion. “The spirit here is fantastic and this feels a bit like a victory,” said Rafa. “It was a great game, an open game and both teams wanted to win. We all enjoyed it, the speed was unbelievable.

“We fought to the end and you could see with our fans it was a fantastic night and we picked up a hard-fought point.

“But there is still a long way to go in this season, and now we have to focus on Saturday (West Brom at the Lane) and do our best to get a win to keep up the pressure on Manchester City.”

The draw took us to within two points of City in fourth place in the Premier League with six matches remaining. Of course, we meet at Eastlands on Tuesday, May 10.

It also represented Rafa’s first goals since February. “You always want to score goals but sometimes you need a bit of luck for the goals to come your way,” he added.

“Maybe I haven’t had that recently but it was great to be back among the goals again, especially in such a big game.

“It’s all about the team though. I scored two goals which was fantastic but Tom scored an incredible goal as well. It was a great performance.”
