Jonathan Woodgate has called on the spirit of last season's Carling Cup success to inspire us to victory at the start of our defence of the trophy in tonight's third round clash with Newcastle United at St James' Park.
The defender believes the players involved in our famous win over Chelsea at Wembley in February will no doubt give anything to experience the glory all over again.
And Woody, who scored the winner in that final, is also well aware that victory tonight could provide a timely boost to our league form as we still search for our first three points of the campaign.
"It's a crucial a game for us because we want to get the winning mentality back in the dressing room," said the England international, who will tonight be returning to the club he spent 18 months as a player.
"The gaffer has reiterated the importance of us getting back to winning ways as soon as possible, and if we can do that in a cup competition, hopefully that will provide the platform for us to go on and do it in the league.
"We'd like to retain the trophy and we know this is a competition that could take us into Europe like it did last season. Hopefully we can go as far as we can and even win it again this season.
"The winning feeling we got after last season's cup final was second to none, and I'm sure we'll be reminding each other of those feelings in the dressing room before the game."
